Johnson County is a south of Tarrant County and has a rich western history. Its major cities of Burleson, Cleburne, Crowley, and parts of Mansfield share a strong connection to their rural, agrarian past and modern master planned communities. The seat of the county is Cleburne, a historic city named after the Confederate General Patrick Cleburne and Johnson County is named after Texas Ranger Middleton Johnson. Though the region were settled by pioneers back into the mid 1800s, it had been home to a rich Native American heritage long before. While neighboring Tarrant County began an industrial boom at the turn of the twentieth century, the cities of Cleburne, Burleson, and Crowley maintained their small town feel and roots and that continues today. With a 150,000 population over 730 square miles there is a lot of open spaces in Johnson County. Many who work in Tarrant County live in neighboring Johnson County and make their manageable commutes into Downtown Fort Worth and surrounding cities.
Today, visitors to Johnson County and locals enjoy large preserved wilderness, parks, and outdoor recreation. The county has seen recent development of both master planned retail and housing communities. Cleburne offers a historic downtown and picturesque courthouse. Finally, the local school systems of Cleburne, Burleson, Crowley, and Mansfield are local recognized for their academic and athletic programs.
