Incisional Approaches in Breast Augmentation Surgery

There are different incision options when it comes to breast augmentation surgery. Scarring is generally expected following breast augmentation. The incision technique used can help minimize the appearance of scarring. The type of incision right for you is best decided between you and your surgeon. The following is an overview of breast augmentation incision options from Fort Worth plastic surgeon Vishnu Rumalla.

The Inframammary Incision

The inframammary incision technique is performed by creating an incision beneath the breast, specifically where the body and breast meet. The breast implant is inserted through the incision made on the underside of the breast. Once the breast is placed, the incision is closed. The inframammary incision technique keeps scarring discreetly hidden beneath the fold of the breast. Many surgeons find the inframammary incision allows for better results; it allows for more control over the implant placement. Another benefit of the inframammary incision is that this incision can be reused in the event of breast augmentation revision or implant replacement.

The Periareolar Incision

Another breast augmentation incision option is the periareolar approach. With the periareolar technique, an incision is created around the outer border of the areola. The incision is made where the areola, the dark area around the nipple, meets the breast to minimize the appearance of scarring. Though efforts are taken to reduce the visibility of scarring, scarring from periareolar incisions may be more noticeable due to the central location of the incision. Other possible downsides to the periareolar approach include a slight risk of loss of nipple sensation.

The TUBA Incision

Trans-umbilical breast augmentation incision, or the TUBA incision, is performed by creating a single incision at the navel. From this incision, a V-shaped tunnel is formed between the skin and fat leading to the breasts. The breast implants are placed through the incision at the navel and guided up the pre-formed tunnel with the aid of an endoscope. Women who don't want any scarring on the breast may consider the TUBA incision technique as no incisions are made on the breast with this option. The  disadvantages to the TUBA incision include the risk of a visible “V” shape on the abdomen and the inability to reuse this incision if breast augmentation revision is needed.

The Transaxillary Incision

Another option for breast augmentation incisions is the transaxillary technique. The transaxillary incision involves creating an incision in the axilla, or underarm. This incision technique prevents scarring on the breast as incisions are made within the folds of the armpit. Though scarring will not occur on the breasts, the transaxillary approach may leave scars on the underarm. The transaxillary incision cannot be reused if revision is needed. The risk of asymmetrical breasts is another possible downside to the transaxillary approach.
